Coachella City Council Faces Questions Over $12M in Missing Funds and Costly “On-Call” Consultants
Where has $12 million of taxpayer money gone? That’s the burning question at tonight’s Coachella City Council meeting, where financial records reveal that an unassigned fund balance has dropped from $17 million to $5 million in just one year.
A closer look at city expenses shows nearly $340,000 allocated for on-call consultants, including $84,000 to a consulting firm, $42,000 for an on-call planning consultant, and $140,000 for a full-time executive assistant to the city manager—a salary some say is excessive.
Attorney Annie from the Walter Clark Law Group explained that residents who suspect corruption or financial mismanagement can report it to the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office, the FBI’s public corruption hotline (1-877-NO-BRIBE), or file a citizen complaint through the Riverside County Superior Court grand jury. If residents feel ignored, a taxpayer lawsuit or recall effort is another option.
Transparency advocates say residents should attend council meetings and demand answers, while experts like Stephanie Green and Anthony Turk argue that taxpayer money should be allocated per job—not to consultants simply being “on call.”
With public trust at stake, the city is under pressure to explain these expenses and restore accountability to its budget.
