U.S. Border Patrol Seizes $213,000 Worth of Narcotics at El Centro Checkpoint
INDIO, Calif. — U.S. Border Patrol agents at the El Centro Sector made a significant narcotics seizure on Wednesday, February 14, 2025. At approximately 10:46 a.m., a yellow semi-truck approached the U.S. Border Patrol State Route 86 immigration checkpoint. The vehicle was referred for secondary inspection after a K-9 detection team trained to detect both narcotics and concealed persons alerted to the truck.
Upon closer inspection, agents found fresh tool marks on the axle head, which prompted further examination. They uncovered 14 packages wrapped in plastic cellophane, a typical sign of drug smuggling. Tests later confirmed the bundles contained 17.5 pounds of cocaine, valued at approximately $198,500, and 8 pounds of methamphetamine, worth an estimated $14,500.
El Centro Sector Chief Patrol Agent Gregory K. Bovino expressed satisfaction with the bust, noting, “This excellent apprehension came just in time for Valentine’s Day. My heart is filled with warmth at both the thought that these dangerous drugs won’t make it to ma and pa America and the fact that a black-hearted drug smuggler hopefully is headed to prison.”
The driver was apprehended, and the narcotics were seized as evidence. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
