Government Job Cuts Expand: Social Security, National Parks, and VA Workers Affected
Sweeping federal job cuts continue to impact government agencies across the country. The latest to be affected is the Social Security Administration (SSA), which has announced the elimination of its Office of Transformation. In a statement, the acting commissioner called the department "wasteful and insufficient," aligning with President Trump’s executive orders aimed at cutting government spending. The Office of Transformation was responsible for improving customer service and supporting individuals with disabilities and those facing employment barriers.
These cuts come amid broader downsizing efforts. Just two weeks ago, 1,000 National Park Service employees—many stationed at Yosemite National Park—were let go. The layoffs, which took place on February 14, have been dubbed the "Valentine's Day Massacre" by affected workers. Protesters have gathered at national park sites, voicing concerns over job security and the potential impact on park operations.
While President Trump has not directly commented on the national park layoffs, he previously restricted the hiring of seasonal workers. However, he has since reversed course, allowing parks like Yosemite to recruit seasonal staff to fill critical roles.
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has also been hit hard, terminating 1,400 probationary employees this month. The VA claims the move will save over $83 million annually, funds that will be redirected to veteran healthcare and services. The dismissed employees were described as "non-mission-critical" and included roles in diversity, inclusion, and equity programs.
Critics argue the cuts disproportionately affect frontline workers and essential services, while supporters believe the restructuring will enhance efficiency and refocus spending on core priorities.

Palm Springs is mourning the loss of beloved entertainer James “Gypsy” Haake, who has died at 94. Haake began his entertainment career at just 19 years old as a Broadway chorus dancer. After retiring from the stage, he returned to performing at 82, becoming the host of Carnival Cabaret at Oscars in downtown Palm Springs. A longtime friend of our station, Haake was a familiar and beloved figure in the Palm Springs entertainment community — and his contributions were recognized with a star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars.
