Palm Desert High School Baseball Team Highlights Benefits of Multi-Sport Athletes
In today’s world of specialization, many young athletes focus on one sport from an early age. However, experts are now highlighting the importance of cross-training. The benefits of participating in multiple sports go beyond simply enhancing athleticism. It helps reduce burnout, lowers injury risk, and fosters a well-rounded skill set.
Caitlin Kelly met with the Palm Desert High School baseball team, featuring standout dual-sport athletes Jake Brand and Zach Gibbs. Both athletes credit their success to the cross-training they gain from playing other sports.
Jake Brande, a star pitcher, plays basketball in addition to baseball. He shared how basketball has sharpened his performance on the baseball field. "It helped me prepare mentally and physically for the season," he said, citing the sport's fast pace and demanding endurance training. "Basketball makes baseball feel slower," he adds, highlighting how it sharpens his focus and stamina. According to his coach, Brande’s cardio endurance from basketball allows him to pitch longer without tiring, as demonstrated by his recent 106-pitch game.
Zach Gibbs, another key player, is considering a future in baseball after being named the Desert Suns 2024 High School Football Defensive Player of the Year. Gibbs explained how football’s intense weight room sessions and different style of coaching have helped him build strength and resilience for baseball. "It’s helped me in a lot of different ways," Gibbs said. "You work out muscles that you don’t usually work out in baseball."
The Palm Desert team is off to a strong start with a 2-0 record in the Desert Empire League. With athletes like Brande and Gibbs, the team is not only building athletic prowess but also developing the mental and physical tools necessary to succeed on and off the field. As they look ahead to their next game against Rancho Mirage, the future seems bright for these dual-sport athletes and their team.
Jake Brande is committed to pitch at Long Beach State next year, while Zach Gibbs is still weighing his college options. The Palm Desert High School baseball team’s approach to multi-sport participation is a reminder of the importance of a well-rounded athletic experience.
