Tariff Increases Could Raise the Cost of Comics and Toys for Collectors

The ongoing trade war could soon make comic books and collectibles more expensive, as new tariffs on Canadian goods are set to take effect on April 2nd.

At Maximum Comics in the Southwest Valley, owner Jay Bosworth explains the challenge. “Almost all comics are printed in Canada,” he says. “The U.S. hasn’t opened a new printing press since the 90s.” If the 25% tariff goes into effect, a standard $4.99 comic book could jump to $6.25, making an already niche market even more difficult for small businesses.

Beyond comics, merchandise from China has already seen a 20% price increase due to tariffs implemented in February. While some businesses are absorbing costs, Bosworth says that’s not an option for small retailers. Instead, his store has focused on transparency with customers and finding new ways to bring people in, such as hosting social gatherings, store parties, and community outreach events.

For comic fans and collectors, the impact of these tariffs could make their favorite hobby more expensive, but stores like Maximum Comics are determined to keep the culture alive.
