Social Security Verification Changes Raise Concerns Over Accessibility
A major change is coming to Social Security as the Trump administration plans to implement stricter identity verification measures. Soon, recipients will no longer be able to prove their identity over the phone, meaning those unable to use the online service will need to visit Social Security offices in person.
The shift coincides with planned closures of dozens of Social Security offices nationwide and significant staff reductions. The changes, backed by Elon Musk, are being framed as a crackdown on entitlement fraud and illegal immigration—claims for which experts say there is no substantial evidence.
While the administration insists it is targeting fraudulent claims rather than cutting benefits, advocates warn that the policy will make it harder for seniors and those with mobility issues to access the services they rely on.
"It's going to make field offices more crowded and more difficult to access benefits we have all earned," said Nancy Altman, a Social Security advocate.
With concerns mounting over accessibility, the impact of these new measures remains to be seen.
