President Trump Signs Executive Order to Dismantle Department of Education
WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Donald Trump signed an executive order this afternoon to begin dismantling the Department of Education, citing allegations that the department misused nearly $1 billion under the Biden administration.
During a White House signing ceremony, President Trump expressed his commitment to returning educational power to families and states. "My administration will take all lawful steps to shut down the department. We're going to shut it down and shut it down as quickly as possible. It's doing us no good," Trump stated.
Following the signing, President Trump called Education Secretary Linda McMahon to stand with him as he presented the executive order to attendees. The president emphasized that returning education control to the states would benefit students, noting support from several governors.
While the executive order marks the beginning of the dismantling process, the complete abolition of the Department of Education requires congressional approval. The administration assures that essential functions, including civil rights enforcement and oversight of student loans and Pell Grants, will continue during the transition.
Secretary McMahon and the Trump administration have already acted to significantly reduce the department's size, cutting its workforce by nearly 50% in recent weeks.
President Trump concluded, "We want education to come back to the states, and they're going to do a phenomenal job."
The proposal to eliminate the Department of Education remains a contentious issue, with supporters advocating for state control and critics warning of potential disruptions in educational services and oversight.
