Family and Supporters Rally for Menendez Brothers’ Release as L.A. D.A. Rejects Resentencing
Supporters of Erik and Lyle Menendez gathered outside the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office this week to rally for the brothers’ release, following District Attorney Nathan Hochman’s recent decision not to support their resentencing efforts.
It was the first public demonstration by family members and criminal justice advocates, reigniting national attention on the infamous 1989 Beverly Hills murders in which the Menendez brothers were convicted of killing their parents, José and Kitty Menendez. The brothers have been serving life sentences without the possibility of parole.
Their cousin, Anamaria Baralt, addressed the crowd with a passionate message. “We will not stop fighting for Erik and Lyle, for justice and for the truth,” she said.
Recent documentaries and dramatizations have renewed public interest in the case, with some now expressing sympathy for the brothers. Supporters argue the Menendez brothers were victims of prolonged sexual and emotional abuse by their father, and acted in “imperfect self-defense.”
“They are not the same men that they were when they were 18 and 21 years old,” one woman at the rally said. “They went through a lifetime of horrific abuse.”
However, D.A. Hochman remains unconvinced. In a press conference last week, he accused the brothers of lying about their motivations, saying, “The Menendezes have basically engaged in not just the ultimate lie of self-defense, but a whole series of lies around it.”
Hochman did indicate that he may reconsider his stance—if the brothers publicly admit they fabricated their claims. That’s something Anamaria Baralt says is not going to happen.
“That would require them to really compromise their integrity,” she said. “To turn their backs on their story... I do not see a universe where that would happen.”
As public debate continues, the Menendez brothers remain behind bars, while their supporters say they will keep pushing for justice.

Salton city resident Abraham Feinbloom is expected to take a plea deal in the murder case of 17 year old T’Neya Tovar. Under the plea deal obtained by the Imperial County Criminal Courthouse, Feinbloom will plead guilty to one count of torture and voluntary manslaughter. According to court records, he is also expected to assist law enforcement in finding the rest of the victim’s remains.
