Democrats Face Internal Pressure as Protests Grow Against Elon Musk and Trump Agenda

Democrats are feeling heat from within their own ranks as growing protests call for bolder action against President Trump’s agenda and the billionaire figures tied to it — most notably Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

NBC’s Hallie Jackson reports that protests erupted outside the home of Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, with demonstrators demanding new Democratic leadership. “Shop, resign, the people say it’s time,” one protester shouted, accusing Schumer of failing to take a stronger stand.

The criticism intensified after Schumer and several Democrats joined Republicans this month to pass a government funding bill aimed at avoiding a shutdown. “I knew when I cast my vote… there would be a lot of controversy,” Schumer acknowledged. “But a shutdown would be 15 or 20 times worse.”

Progressive leaders like Senator Bernie Sanders and Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez are capitalizing on the moment, drawing massive crowds — including more than 34,000 in Denver alone, by Sanders' count. “We need a Democratic Party that fights harder for us,” Sanders said at a recent rally.

Much of the outrage is also directed at Elon Musk, who protesters say is slashing the federal workforce and influencing policy through his close ties to the administration. Tesla faced protests and boycott calls nationwide over the weekend, with demonstrators demanding Musk be removed as CEO.

“We are not going to be silent,” said one protester. “I want the board to take him off as CEO of Tesla.”

Musk, in a livestreamed meeting with Tesla workers, pushed back against the criticism. “So what I’m saying is hang on to your stock,” he told employees, rallying them in the face of recent share price dips.

The growing wave of dissent reveals a widening rift within the Democratic Party — one demanding not just resistance to Trump, but bold leadership and change from within.
