GameStop to Close More Stores Amid Struggles in Streaming Era
It’s game over for even more GameStop locations as the once-dominant video game retailer continues its downsizing trend.
The company announced plans to close a significant number of its remaining stores over the coming months. The closures are part of GameStop’s ongoing struggle to adapt to a rapidly changing marketplace, where streaming, digital downloads, and shifting consumer spending habits have eroded its traditional retail model.
A decade ago, GameStop operated around 6,000 stores worldwide. Today, that number has shrunk to just over 3,200.
Company officials say they’ve been slow to pivot in the age of digital gaming, where players increasingly buy games online or access them through streaming and subscription services rather than visiting brick-and-mortar stores.
The announcement marks yet another chapter in the ongoing evolution of the video game industry and the broader decline of traditional retail as consumers embrace more convenient, tech-forward options.

Palm Springs is mourning the loss of beloved entertainer James “Gypsy” Haake, who has died at 94. Haake began his entertainment career at just 19 years old as a Broadway chorus dancer. After retiring from the stage, he returned to performing at 82, becoming the host of Carnival Cabaret at Oscars in downtown Palm Springs. A longtime friend of our station, Haake was a familiar and beloved figure in the Palm Springs entertainment community — and his contributions were recognized with a star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars.
