Canadian PM Mark Carney: U.S. ‘No Longer a Reliable Partner’ Amid Tariff Fallout

Tensions between Canada and the United States continue to rise following President Donald Trump’s new tariffs on imported cars and auto parts. On Thursday, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney responded publicly, delivering a blunt assessment of the state of cross-border relations.

“It’s clear the U.S. is no longer a reliable partner,” Carney said during a press conference in Ottawa, standing in front of Canadian flags. “It is possible that with comprehensive negotiations, we could reestablish an element of confidence — but there will be no going backwards.”

Carney’s comments follow weeks of backlash from Canadian leaders. Earlier this month, British Columbia Premier David Eby said the U.S.-Canada relationship had been “changed forever” by the ongoing trade dispute.

The Prime Minister also promised retaliatory trade measures in response to the White House’s decision to impose 25% tariffs, which are expected to raise car prices significantly across North America.

Carney confirmed he plans to speak with President Trump directly in an effort to manage the fallout, though he made it clear that Canada is preparing for a "fundamentally different relationship" moving forward.
