Massive 7.7 Earthquake in Myanmar Triggers Regional Chaos, Collapses High-Rise in Bangkok

A devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck near Mandalay, Myanmar, sending violent tremors across Southeast Asia and triggering widespread destruction in multiple countries. The U.S. Geological Survey reported the quake's epicenter just 10 miles from Mandalay, a city of over 1.2 million people.

The earthquake was described as strong and shallow, increasing its destructive potential. In Bangkok, Thailand, where earthquakes are rare, the tremors caused the collapse of a high-rise building under construction. Dozens of workers are reportedly trapped beneath the rubble, with only a handful rescued so far. Other buildings swayed, forcing people to flee into the streets. A rooftop swimming pool dramatically overflowed, turning into a waterfall.

Thailand’s Prime Minister has since declared a state of emergency in Myanmar, underscoring the regional impact of the disaster.

Social media images from Myanmar show catastrophic damage, including the collapse of a bridge over the Irrawaddy River. Reports indicate that mass casualty centers are being set up at hospitals as officials prepare for a rising death toll.

With Myanmar already strained by an ongoing civil war, the full scope of the earthquake’s human and infrastructural toll remains unclear. However, early reports mention damage to roads, highways, bridges, airports, and ports.

As the region braces for further aftershocks, the Myanmar government is urgently calling on citizens to donate blood.

Nearly a year after wildfires tore through Mountain Center, the scars are still visible along the Palms to Pines Highway. Now, fire crews are working to repair those burn areas and reduce the risk of flooding, erosion and mudslides when heavy rain arrives. The work includes fire-line suppression repairs, water bars and other measures designed to slow rainwater and keep burned soil from washing away. CAL FIRE Riverside County Battalion Chief Ryan Lubin says the steep terrain, dry brush and limited access continue to create challenges for mountain communities. With El Niño conditions expected to bring periods of heavy rain, officials say preparing now could help protect homes and communities from the aftermath of wildfire. The message from firefighters: preparation can save lives.
