Palm Springs Breaks Down Navigation Center Numbers
Palm Springs employees are singing the praises of the city's current efforts to combat the homelessness crisis in the area. In particular, during Thursday nights city council meeting, the Palm Springs Navigation Center was put underneath the microscope. Employees from Martha's Village and Kitchen, who help operate the facility, and Palm Springs Police broke down the data on just how many people have been positively effected by the cities ongoing work. The city takes what it calls a three-phase approach comprising the Access Center, Early Entry Facility, and Navigation Center—to offer essential services, transitional housing, and long-term support.
Here's a look at what each of those facilities has been able to do, with numbers provided by the city.
The Access Center has served 604 individuals, offering over 17,000 services such as showers, case management, and transportation assistance. Additionally, 985 housing placements and referrals have helped move people into emergency shelters, rapid rehousing, or permanent supportive housing.
The Early Entry Facility, a temporary shelter with 50 beds, maintains an 90% utilization rate, with an average stay of 17 days. So far, 31 individuals have successfully transitioned from this phase, moving toward long-term stability. The facility has also served over 34,500 meals and ensures that individuals can stay with their pets, having housed 13 dogs and 3 cats.
The Navigation Center, a transitional housing program, consists of 80 residential units. Currently, 65 units are occupied, providing shelter for 87 individuals. Residents receive comprehensive support, including employment case management, job search assistance, and financial literacy training. The center has already facilitated multiple successful exits into permanent housing, with more scheduled in the coming months.
According to the presentation at Thursday's city council meeting, The Palm Springs Police Department has played a critical role in reducing homelessness. The department’s Impact Team has helped reunite 41 individuals with their families and housed over 112 people outside of the center. Officers have also cleared more than 20 large encampments through their efforts.
These programs are funded in part by a $5.1 million Encampment Resolution Grant, according to city officials.

Palm Springs is mourning the loss of beloved entertainer James “Gypsy” Haake, who has died at 94. Haake began his entertainment career at just 19 years old as a Broadway chorus dancer.
