Violent storms threaten 170 million people Sunday and Monday

Millions of people across the United States are at risk for violent storms this Sunday and Monday. The two-day severe weather event is expected to bring a mix of tornadoes, hail, and thunderstorms. In Louisiana, heavy rain triggered flash flooding in Rayne, where 6-10 inches fell on Saturday, and many communities in the state are bracing for more rain in the coming days.

The next round of severe storms is forecast to impact roughly 170 million people from eastern Texas up to Michigan. Meteorologists predict that this system could unleash intense thunderstorms and possible tornadoes. “As we get closer to the evening, that line really begins to form, and that’s where the strongest storms are expected to be,” said CNN Meteorologist Allison Chinchar.

Parts of southern Texas are still reeling from flooding caused by days of heavy rain. In Rio Grande, residents were seen wading through knee-deep water on Saturday. In Alamo, Texas, shelters have been opened to help those whose homes were affected by the flooding. “Obviously, this is a very strenuous time for the public and the families,” said Rolando Garcia, PSJA ISD Police Chief.

This year has been particularly violent for weather, with approximately 300 tornadoes reported since January—nearly double the number of tornadoes reported by this time last year. Many areas at risk for severe weather this weekend have already been impacted by storms earlier in the month.
