Tesla Drivers Thoughts On Tesla Protests
Multiple protests have recently emerged in the Coachella Valley, fueled by Elon Musk's growing influence within the political sphere and his involvement with the Trump administration. The protests have targeted Tesla, with demonstrators voicing strong opinions about Musk’s controversial actions and his company's potential ties to politics. While the protests themselves are significant, what stands out is the perspective of Tesla owners, many of whom find themselves caught between supporting the protests and their dependence on the vehicles they drive.
Reporter Brett Rosen spoke to several Tesla drivers who expressed mixed feelings about the ongoing protests. While many empathize with the protesters’ frustrations, some fear the backlash they could face for being associated with Musk and his company.
“I agree with people being upset over what he's doing, and kind of getting involved with the government. But am I scared that my car might be set on fire or vandalized? Yes, personally, I am a little skeptical now because of everything I see online,” said one Tesla owner. “If they feel the need to protest, I’m with them,” they added.
Anthony Harrington, a relatively new Tesla owner, shared similar concerns. "I don’t agree with what Elon is doing, but like I’m also in a tough position because he’s putting a car on the market that is nice and affordable and has everything I need. So, while I don’t support him, I still needed this car," Harrington explained. Despite his reservations about Musk, he felt stuck in a dilemma where the affordability of the Tesla outweighed his discomfort with Musk’s politics.
However, not all Tesla owners view the situation as such a complicated issue. One long-time Tesla owner reflected on the recurring nature of protests, pointing out that while these movements get a lot of attention on social media, they often lack lasting impact.
"We’ve seen it a lot, and I wish there was more long-term change. People start these boycotts, like not shopping at Target, but no one really follows through. I think it’s the same with this," she noted.
As Tesla owners continue to charge their vehicles in public spaces like the River in Rancho Mirage, the divide in opinion grows. Some remain hopeful that the protests will force a long-term shift in Tesla's trajectory, while others fear that such actions may do little to create change. As protests continue and Musk’s political ties evolve, the future of Tesla, its image, and its customer base remain uncertain.
Ultimately, it’s clear that the controversy surrounding Musk is far from over, and Tesla buyers will have to navigate this ongoing debate while trying to maintain their place in a rapidly changing market. For more information tune into NBC Palm Springs.
