Palm Springs Animal Shelter Offers Support for Grieving Pet Owners
In Palm Springs, the deep bond people share with their pets is being recognized and supported through a unique program called Sammy Circle, hosted at the Palm Springs Animal Shelter. The support group was founded by Tamara Hedges, who, after losing her dog, Sammy, unexpectedly in 2019, experienced overwhelming grief. This experience led her to create a group that could help others navigate the often overlooked but intense grief associated with the loss of a pet.
Pet loss grief can sometimes feel just as profound as losing a human family member, yet it is frequently under-recognized. Sammy Circle offers a space where those mourning their pets can gather to share stories, reflect, and find comfort among others who understand their pain. The group emphasizes that everyone grieves in their own way, at their own pace, and offers a safe environment for those dealing with the emotional weight of a pet’s passing.
Held on the first Wednesday and third Thursday of each month, Sammy Circle is open to the public. Those attending can either share their stories or simply listen, knowing that they are not alone in their mourning process. Palm Springs is mourning the loss of beloved entertainer James “Gypsy” Haake, who has died at 94. Haake began his entertainment career at just 19 years old as a Broadway chorus dancer. After retiring from the stage, he returned to performing at 82, becoming the host of Carnival Cabaret at Oscars in downtown Palm Springs. A longtime friend of our station, Haake was a familiar and beloved figure in the Palm Springs entertainment community — and his contributions were recognized with a star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars.
