Thousands Cut from HHS in Federal Job Reductions, Including 300 in San Francisco
More job cuts are hitting the federal government—this time at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), where thousands of employees nationwide are being let go, including around 300 staff members based in San Francisco.
Many of those affected worked out of the Nancy Pelosi Federal Building, supporting programs aimed at helping the nation’s most economically vulnerable, including SNAP (food assistance), Head Start, Medicare, and Medicaid.
“This was my dream job,” said one emotional employee, who shared how they brought a plant to their desk and had planned to stay until retirement. “It’s total chaos. I didn’t even get to sign what I was supposed to sign—my computer was just turned off.”
House Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi has vowed to fight back against the layoffs, expressing concern over their impact on critical services.
With these cuts, many are questioning how already-strained social service programs will continue to function—and what this could mean for the future of public support systems in communities across the country, including right here in the Coachella Valley.
