Yankees Unleash Torpedo Bat Era with Explosive Start to 2025 Season
A new era of power may be taking shape in Major League Baseball — and it’s starting with the New York Yankees. Over the weekend, the Yankees launched the so-called “torpedo bat era,” smashing 13 home runs in just two games using uniquely shaped bats with a radical new design.
The bats, made by Victus Sports in Pennsylvania, have shifted the distribution of the wood, moving more mass closer to the batter’s hands. The result? A concentrated sweet spot optimized for where players most frequently make contact.
“We’ve always been innovating,” said Jared Smith, co-founder of Victus. “But the attention this weekend has been incredible.”
What began in a garage 14 years ago is now one of the most sought-after pieces of equipment in baseball. “Just looking at the shape, the taper changes everything,” Smith added. “There’s less weight at the end of the bat and more where it counts.”
Much of the design work was driven by data — and MIT-level minds. Aaron Lenhardt, a key engineer of the torpedo bat design for the Yankees, now works with the Miami Marlins. “It’s surreal to see this kind of reaction,” Lenhardt said.
Some critics have raised questions about whether the torpedo bat crosses a line. But according to MLB, the bat is fully legal. “We design within the rules,” Smith said. “It’s no different than changing the taper — just a new version of it.”
Demand is skyrocketing. Victus reports that over half of Major League players have reached out to inquire or place orders. The company’s warehouse outside Philadelphia is now working nearly nonstop to meet the surge.
Even non-pros are curious. “To be fair,” one player joked, “curveballs torpedoed my big league dreams a long time ago.”
As for now, the Yankees and their powerful new bats are making waves — and the rest of the league is paying attention.
