Augustine Band of Cahuilla Indians Hosts First Earth and Sustainability Day at Temalpakh Farm Ingesting
The Augustine Band of Cahuilla Indians welcomed the community to its first-ever Earth and Sustainability Day at Temalpakh Farm in Coachella, offering a unique and hands-on learning experience for local students and families.
NBC Palm Springs' Tiani Jadling was live at the event, where groups of 5th-grade students explored educational booths and demonstrations focusing on renewable energy, desert wildlife, and sustainable agriculture. The immersive event also featured local organizations and tribal representatives, including IID and CVWD, providing kids with an up-close look at how the region is working to protect natural resources.
Amanda Augustine, Tribal Chairperson of the Augustine Band of Cahuilla Indians, emphasized the importance of teaching young people where their food comes from: “They can see the crops right behind the market and understand the full cycle—harvested here in Coachella and sold right here in our store.”
The students also participated in fun, hands-on activities like making seed flower bombs, learning how sustainability can be both educational and enjoyable.
Temalpakh Farm, a certified organic farm, continues to be a hub for sustainable living and cultural education in the valley. While Earth Day is officially April 22, this early celebration planted the seeds of environmental stewardship in the next generation.
