50 Hikers Rescued After Being Stranded Overnight on Hawaii’s Kalalau Trail
HONOLULU, HI (CNN Newsource) – A group of 50 hikers is safe after being stranded overnight on Hawaii’s treacherous yet breathtaking Kalalau Trail along the Na Pali Coast of Kauai. The unexpected ordeal began Thursday when sudden, heavy rains transformed scenic terrain into a hazardous environment.
Megan Wong, a Kauai resident who later helped provide supplies, said the weather turned rapidly. “It was like a sheet of rain coming out of nowhere,” she recalled. Later that evening, while passing the trailhead’s parking lot, she learned dozens of hikers were trapped about two miles into the trail, blocked by a suddenly swollen river.
One hiker narrowly avoided disaster when he stepped into the water, saw it turn brown, and spotted a wall of water coming downstream—prompting the group to retreat.
Joel Guy of the Hanalei Initiative, which provides shuttle services to the trail, explained how one hiker used the iPhone’s satellite SOS feature to alert the outside world, even without cell service. “You could see the family on the outside wondering, are they okay, what can we do?” Guy said.
With firefighters advising them to shelter in place, the hikers accessed an emergency shed along the trail stocked with tarps, water, and supplies. Wong was prepared to hike in additional resources but learned the hikers were managing with what they had.
By early Friday morning, water levels began to recede, and the group was finally able to cross back to safety. They were greeted at the trailhead with coffee and comfort from local residents, including Wong.
“They huddled together, most of them,” Wong said. “They were damp but in good spirits. One guy said he did squats all night to stay warm. When you hit something that feels disastrous and people come together, you become a village.”
No injuries were reported, and the event highlighted the power of community and the importance of emergency preparedness when exploring Hawaii’s wild trails.
