Colossal Biosciences Brings Dire Wolves Back from Extinction

An animal long believed to be lost to history has made an astonishing return—thanks to cutting-edge genetic science.

Colossal Biosciences has announced the successful birth of three dire wolf pups—Romulus, Remus, and Khalessi—marking a major milestone in the company's high-profile de-extinction project. The pups were born on October 1, 2024, and are being raised at a confidential nature preserve to ensure their health and safety.

The achievement was made possible through the use of ancient DNA extracted from a 13,000-year-old tooth and a 72,000-year-old skull. Scientists then used gene editing techniques to embed dire wolf traits into the genome of a closely related living species, ultimately resulting in the birth of the genetically engineered pups.

Colossal Biosciences, known for its bold efforts to resurrect extinct species, says these pups exhibit key characteristics of the prehistoric dire wolves—giant, powerful canines that once roamed North and South America. The species disappeared over 12,000 years ago, but it gained new popularity thanks to the HBO series Game of Thrones, which featured dire wolves as loyal, mythical companions.

While the project may evoke sci-fi comparisons, it raises important discussions about the future of conservation, genetics, and our ability to reverse extinction through modern technology.

As the pups grow, researchers will monitor their development closely, exploring both their biological makeup and their behavioral traits. For now, these remarkable animals represent a thrilling fusion of science, history, and imagination.
