Consumers Feel the Squeeze as Tariffs Drive Up Prices on Everyday Goods

For many American consumers, the reality of rising prices is hitting close to home—literally. With President Donald Trump’s sweeping tariffs now in effect, everyday essentials like sinks, faucets, and shower heads are getting more expensive.

NBC’s Camila Bernal reports from Los Angeles, where shoppers like Brett Myers are scrambling to make purchases before prices rise even further. Myers, currently remodeling his home, says the impact of tariffs is broad: “It’s the house, it’s the car, it’s all sorts of worries.”

Russ Diamond, president of home goods store Snyder Diamond, says his business is already seeing the effects. “I got a notice last night from one of our vendors in the UK apologizing for the short notice, but their price is going up Monday,” he said. “We would have to most likely pass that on to our consumer.”

Many U.S. brand-name items are actually manufactured overseas. Products from the UK, France, Canada, and Mexico are now facing increased costs—some as high as 15%—due to new tariffs and retaliatory measures from foreign governments.

And it’s not just home goods. Toys, phones, and cars are all expected to see price hikes, affecting family budgets across the board. “It’s tough to predict how to allocate your money,” one shopper shared. “Especially with a growing family, you’re just trying to save all of it.”

While some believe the long-term goal of bringing manufacturing jobs back to the U.S. is worth the short-term pain, others are feeling the pinch in their wallets now. “My investments have tanked,” one customer admitted. “But I think Donald Trump is doing the right thing.”

With price increases looming and uncertainty in global trade relations, both consumers and retailers are left hoping the economic turbulence is only temporary.
