Palm Desert Mobile Library Celebrates National Library Week at NBC Palm Springs Studio

In celebration of National Library Week, the Palm Desert Mobile Library made a special appearance outside the NBC Palm Springs studio, offering a firsthand look at the mobile library service known as "Books on Board." Chloe Carlson was live at the scene, speaking with Gary Shaffer, Director of Library Services at the Palm Desert Library, about the importance of National Library Week.

"National Library Week is a time to recognize the dedicated staff, volunteers, and patrons of libraries nationwide," said Shaffer. "There are more libraries in the U.S. than Starbucks or McDonald's, and they’re just as busy!"

Shaffer highlighted how library access is more convenient than ever, both online and in-person. In addition to offering physical books, the Palm Desert Library provides access to e-books, e-audiobooks, and resources like Tumble Books, which is ideal for young readers learning to read.

One of the library's standout features is its mobile library, affectionately known as "Bob." Traveling across Palm Desert, Bob visits schools, senior centers, and public events like concerts in the park, bringing the library experience to the community.

"Getting a library card is easy," Shaffer noted. "You can sign up online or visit the library in person. Once you have a card, you can access a wealth of resources, including books from over 400 public and academic libraries across the region."

Chloe also took a moment to sign up for her own library card, eager to dive into the wide selection of books available. Before wrapping up, Shaffer shared some advice on choosing books for young children, mentioning that Tumble Books offers an engaging way for early readers to interact with stories.

As temperatures rise this week, Carlson suggested heading to the library to enjoy some cool reading in air-conditioned comfort, with a forecast predicting a heat wave as high as the triple digits. For those looking to escape the heat, the library is a perfect place to relax, read, and explore new adventures.
