Trump Defends Tariff Hikes Amid Economic Fallout, Supreme Court Backs Tougher Deportation Efforts
President Donald Trump is standing firm on his aggressive trade stance, even after another volatile day on Wall Street rattled investors and prompted urgent warnings from economic leaders.
Trump continues to push forward with plans to raise tariffs on nearly all imported goods, including new threats targeting Chinese imports. "We're not looking at that," Trump said in response to growing calls to pause the tariff hikes. "We have many, many countries that are coming to negotiate deals with us and they're going to be fair deals."
The economic uncertainty is being felt nationwide. Billionaire investor and longtime Trump supporter Bill Ackman sounded the alarm, calling the situation a “self-induced economic nuclear winter” and urging the administration to reconsider its approach.
On Capitol Hill, Democrats criticized the tariffs as a hidden tax on American families, pointing to the rising cost of consumer goods. While some Republicans remain supportive of Trump’s vision to restore U.S. manufacturing, others are showing concern. “This is going to be really bad for Texas and really bad for America,” said one GOP lawmaker.
In a separate legal development, the U.S. Supreme Court handed the Trump administration a partial win in its crackdown on immigration. In a narrow 5-4 ruling, the Court overturned a lower decision that had blocked the deportation of alleged Venezuelan gang members under the rarely invoked wartime Alien Enemies Act.
While the Court ruled that migrants must be given due process before removal, immigration advocates warned that legal protections remain fragile. “There’s been absolutely no chance for people to go before any kind of decision maker and say, ‘Hey, you got the wrong guy,’” said one immigration law expert.
In another case, the Court temporarily halted an order to return a man wrongly deported to an El Salvadoran prison, highlighting growing scrutiny of the administration's immigration enforcement.
As economic tensions rise and legal battles continue, both Trump’s trade policies and immigration strategy face mounting public and political pressure.
