Wall Street Rebounds as Experts Urge Calm Amid Market Volatility
Despite ongoing concerns over tariffs and trade tensions, Wall Street opened higher Tuesday morning as markets attempt to rebound from a brutal multi-day slump.
On Monday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average showed extreme volatility—plunging more than 1,700 points at its low, before recovering to close down roughly 350. The index saw a massive 2,600-point swing from its lowest to highest points during the day. Meanwhile, the Nasdaq broke a three-day losing streak, recovering slightly after falling more than 5% at its lowest point.
Desert Living contributor and reporter Maribel Gonzalez spoke with financial experts about what this means for everyday investors.
“This is a shock that markets haven’t really dealt with before,” one analyst noted, referring to the impact of the escalating global trade war.
Still, experts say panic is the wrong move.
“This is not the time to be selling and running for the hills,” said one financial advisor. “If you’re not in the market, this might be a good time to get in—carefully.”
Key advice includes keeping roughly 40% of assets in cash or bond positions, such as high-yield savings or money market accounts, where interest is earned and risk is lower. Diversification remains critical to minimize exposure to sudden drops.
For those near or entering retirement, staying the course and possibly delaying retirement by a year could help cushion long-term goals. “Don’t let the short term affect your planning for the long term,” another expert advised. “Retirement is a decades-long journey.”
Experts also reminded viewers that some of the best market gains historically follow sharp downturns. “You don’t want to sell stocks at depressed prices—that accelerates depletion of your savings,” one said.
Ultimately, investors are urged to stay steady and remember that recovery has been the long-term trend. As Gonzalez wrapped up: “You've got to be in it to win it—even in the face of volatility.”
