Local Teacher Inspires Through Culture, Connection
Maritza Valencia always knew she wanted to teach in the community that raised her. Growing up in Desert Hot Springs, she rarely saw herself represented in the classroom. That gap inspired her to return and become the teacher she once needed. Now, she teaches 5th grade at Bella Vista Elementary, where her students see themselves in her. Her bilingual background bridges the gap for many families. One parent even said, “Finally,” after learning Maritza spoke Spanish. That connection builds trust and comfort in her classroom. Beyond academics, Valencia leads Bella Vista’s Ballet Folklórico club. Students learn about different cultures through traditional dance and music. It’s an experience that expands their worldview and brings pride to campus. Her colleagues admire her passion and tireless dedication. Valencia hopes her students leave knowing they can dream big—no matter where they’re from.
