Indian Canyon Reopens Ahead of Coachella Weekend After Week-Long Closure
After a full week of closures, Indian Canyon Drive is once again open in both directions—just in time for the massive influx of traffic headed into the Coachella Valley.
According to NBC Palm Springs News Director David Reese, the closure was necessary due to ongoing work on a major bridge project spanning the Whitewater River. This effort is part of a larger plan to improve the Indian Canyon corridor, which connects Palm Springs and Desert Hot Springs.
The good news for locals and visitors alike: the project is still on track to be completed by the end of 2025.
While the reopening is a relief for daily commuters, it may have limited impact on the heavy traffic expected from Coachella Festival attendees. More than 100,000 visitors are anticipated this weekend, and traffic on Interstate 10 is expected to become increasingly congested throughout Friday.
The Agua Caliente traffic cam in Rancho Mirage currently shows movement on the I-10, but delays are likely as more festival-goers arrive.
“Palm Springs is already packed,” said Reese. “I just drove through—it’s a madhouse. I heard it took some people five hours to get here last night. So if you’re already in town, congrats. If you’re still on your way—good luck.”
