South Carolina Woman Fights Off Alligator With Garden Tool to Save Husband
A South Carolina woman is being hailed as a hero after she sprang into action to save her husband during a sudden alligator attack in their yard.
Joe and Marian Roeser were gardening outside their Sun City Hilton Head home when the terrifying incident unfolded. According to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office, Joe had his back turned to a nearby pond while spreading mulch when an alligator lunged at him from the water.
Hearing her husband’s cries for help, Marian didn’t hesitate—grabbing the first thing she could find, a tomato stake, and striking the gator until it released him.
"It does sound like they went for the eyes," said Lt. Danny Allen, noting Marian’s instinctive defense. "His wife is a hero."
Joe was airlifted to a nearby hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries and is continuing his recovery. The alligator involved in the attack was captured and euthanized following standard safety protocol.
Lt. Allen used the incident to issue a seasonal warning, reminding residents that April and May mark peak breeding and movement times for alligators, which increases the likelihood of aggressive encounters.
“If an alligator lingers near your property, don’t ignore it,” he advised. “Call the Department of Natural Resources immediately.”
Lt. Allen also offered this advice if attacked: “Fight for your life. Aim for the eyes—but hit wherever you can. And if you see someone else in danger, call 911 right away.”
