Assemblyman Greg Wallis Proposes Solar as Official State Energy of California

California Assemblyman Greg Wallis is pushing to make solar energy the official state energy source. Wallis introduced Assembly Bill 1334 and held a press conference Tuesday morning at The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens in Palm Desert to spotlight the legislation.

The bill, AB 1334, seeks to formally designate solar as the state’s symbolic energy source—a move meant to emphasize California’s leadership in renewable energy and environmental innovation.

In a statement, Wallis's office said the designation would help “highlight California as a global leader in clean energy,” noting the state’s vast solar infrastructure and abundant sunlight.

"California has over 2 million solar rooftops and generated more than 30% of its electricity from solar power in 2022," said Wallis. "This bill is a reflection of who we are and where we’re going."

Though AB 1334 does not include financial incentives or regulatory changes, supporters say it could have a major cultural impact, raising awareness and inspiring continued growth in the clean energy sector.

The bill is currently scheduled for a hearing before the Assembly Utilities and Energy Committee on April 23.
