Drone Camp in Coachella Valley Prepares Students for High-Tech, High-Paying Careers
Careers in drone technology are soaring in the Coachella Valley, and a new camp is giving local students the tools to take flight. The Camp of Champs, sponsored by FIDA USA and Hollywood Drones, is introducing students to the growing world of drone careers—right in their own backyard.
What was once just a hobby or toy has now become a path to high-paying, in-demand jobs. The camp teaches practical skills and highlights the career potential in sectors like solar inspection, windmill and power line monitoring, and agriculture, where drone operators can earn between $75,000 and $100,000 annually.
“What’s great about the Palm Springs Unified School District is that they now have their own drone program, developed in partnership with Camp of Champs,” said one of the program’s organizers. “Students can participate in drone soccer courses at their high schools, and some will graduate ready for work or even go on to college with a specialized skillset.”
Beyond technical flying, the camp also included video production training, giving students a look into the cinematic future of drone work. Actor-led lightsaber sessions and a professional production booth added to the immersive experience.
Timothy Brazel, who led the video production side of the camp, says it’s about more than just teaching skills—it’s about unlocking potential. “Really, it’s all about exposure and sparking that curiosity in them early,” he said. “They may experience something for the first time and realize, ‘I think I want to do this one day.’”
With strong ties to the region’s filmmaking history and booming infrastructure needs, the Coachella Valley is shaping up to be a launchpad for the next generation of drone professionals.
