Trump Administration Eliminates Wire Service Slot from White House Press Pool

The Trump administration has eliminated the designated wire service position in the White House press pool, a move that significantly limits access for organizations like the Associated Press, Reuters, and Bloomberg.

For years, one slot in the press pool rotation was reserved for wire services, which provide coverage to a wide network of news outlets. That slot had traditionally rotated among major organizations, including the AP. But after repeated conflicts—most notably the AP’s continued use of the term "Gulf of Mexico" instead of the administration’s preferred "Gulf of America"—President Trump removed the Associated Press from the rotation.

Last week, a federal judge ruled that the AP must be reinstated and allowed to participate in the wire service slot. Rather than comply, the administration responded by eliminating the wire position entirely. In its place, the White House created a general print position, forcing wire services to compete with a broader group of journalists for limited access.

The change has raised concerns among press freedom advocates, who view it as an attempt to restrict access for independent, wide-reaching news agencies that have historically played a central role in covering the presidency.
