Trump Administration Sues Maine Over Transgender Athletes in Girls' Sports

The Trump administration has filed a lawsuit against the Maine Department of Education, targeting the state’s policy that permits transgender athletes to compete in girls’ sports.

Announcing the lawsuit Wednesday morning, Attorney General Pam Bondi argued that the state’s approach violates Title IX, which prohibits sex-based discrimination in federally funded education programs.

“The state of Maine is discriminating against women by failing to protect women in women’s sports,” Bondi stated during a press conference at the Department of Justice. “This is a violation of Title IX. The Department of Justice will not sit by when women are discriminated against in sports.”

Bondi emphasized that the lawsuit is about more than just competition—it’s also about the personal safety of young women.

The legal action comes after weeks of increasing tension between the Republican-led administration and Democratic Governor Janet Mills, whose administration has defended the inclusive policy. Maine officials argue that Title IX does not bar transgender students from participating in school athletics in alignment with their gender identity.

State representatives have refused to agree to a federal settlement that would have banned transgender participation in school sports, prompting the lawsuit.

Attorney General Bondi also signaled that similar legal actions could be filed in other states with comparable policies, making this a possible precedent-setting case in the ongoing national debate over gender, sports, and education rights.
