Indio Police Warn of DUI and Distracted Driving Ahead of Festival Crowds

New at 6 tonight, local law enforcement is issuing a strong warning as festival season rolls on: don’t drive under the influence and keep your eyes on the road. With massive crowds expected for Stagecoach and a spike in incidents during Coachella, Indio Police are taking extra steps to promote public safety.

During the second weekend of Coachella 2024, Indio Police reported a 40% increase in arrests compared to previous years, totaling 112 arrests. Among them, 24 were for public intoxication and 26 for possession of fake IDs.

“Some hope to end Coachella weekend in a limo,” said an officer. “But they end up in the back of a police car.”

Authorities emphasize that the consequences of drinking and driving are serious, ranging from license suspension and jail time to injury or even death. "One bad decision can change your life or someone else's forever," a department spokesperson said.

With festival-goers arriving as early as Thursday, traffic congestion is expected to increase dramatically—especially late at night and early in the morning. Law enforcement advises planning ahead, choosing designated drivers, and staying alert.

Last year during Stagecoach, police made 124 arrests—a 26% jump over the year prior. Sixty-three of those were related to drugs, alcohol, or intoxication. An additional 83 citations were issued for misuse of handicapped parking placards.

Distracted driving is another growing concern. Officers say that festival excitement and last-minute logistics—like pulling up wristbands, directions, or texting—are creating dangerous distractions behind the wheel.

“Everyone’s excited when they come to the festivals,” one officer noted. “They’ve got luggage in the car, phones in their hands, and they’re trying to sort out entry passes. I just ask everyone to slow down and stay focused.”

The message is simple: plan ahead, drive sober, avoid distractions, and make sure your journey ends safely—whether you’re heading to the venue or back home.
