Romantic Comedy 'The Wedding Banquet' Returns with a Fresh Twist for a New Generation

The Wedding Banquet, a modern reimagining of Ang Lee’s 1993 film, blends humor and emotional depth in a story about family, identity, and love in the present day.

Director Andrew Ahn brings a deeply personal lens to the project. Speaking with Manny the Movie Guy, Ahn reflected on how the original film shaped him. “Ang Lee’s The Wedding Banquet was the first gay film I ever saw,” he said. “It was so special to me, not just because it was gay, but because it was Asian. It helped guide my path as a person and as a filmmaker.”

Initially hesitant to remake such an iconic film, Ahn ultimately felt it was the right time. “So much has changed for the queer community since 1993,” he said. “I used my own experiences to tell a story that honors the original while speaking to a new generation.”

The film stars Bowen Yang, Lily Gladstone, Kelly Marie Tran, Han Gi-chan, Joan Chen, and Youn Yuh-jung in a cast that balances comedy and heart with ease. One of the standout performances comes from Youn Yuh-jung as Halmeoni Jaeyoung, the family matriarch trying to understand her grandson’s new life and relationship.

“I’m 79, and when you get older, you try to be wiser and more accepting,” she said in her interview with Manny. “That’s part of my philosophy—trying to understand the new generation.”

From comedic moments about culture shock to tender scenes exploring generational acceptance, the film finds a meaningful balance that audiences are sure to connect with.

As Manny said in closing, “Everyone should say ‘I do’ to watching this film.”

The Wedding Banquet is now playing in select Valley theaters.
