Economic Growth, Innovation, and Equity Highlighted at State of the 4th District in Indio

Leaders and residents from across the Coachella Valley came together in Indio for the annual State of the 4th District event, where discussions centered around economic growth, equity, and opportunity.

Hosted by Riverside County Supervisor Manuel Perez, the event welcomed hundreds of attendees to hear about ongoing progress in one of California’s fastest-growing regions. A lively mariachi band greeted guests, setting a celebratory tone for a day focused on development and future planning.

“We’re here today because we want to demonstrate that in spite of economic concerns, we are growing,” said Perez. “That growth is happening right here in our own backyard.”

Perez highlighted achievements from the past year, including new affordable housing projects, expanded healthcare services, and significant investments in road and transportation infrastructure throughout the 4th District, which includes cities like Indio, Coachella, La Quinta, and Desert Hot Springs.

The sold-out event drew more than 750 guests, from business owners to policy advocates and community members—each eager to learn more about how they can contribute to local development.

Among the speakers was Ellen Wei, who emphasized the role of technology in transforming agriculture. “We now have machines that can eyesort fruits and vegetables—separating the good from the bad,” she said. “Agriculture is in a revolutionary time.”

On the topic of health equity, Marshae Penny addressed the disparities that persist within the district. “You shouldn’t have to worry about being disadvantaged based on where you live,” she said. “But that is our reality. We must address it through policy, infrastructure improvements, and social change.”

From housing and health to innovation in farming, the message of the day was clear: progress is happening—and the Coachella Valley is at the center of it.
