Runaway Cows Cause Chaos in Pennsylvania Neighborhoods Before Safe Return

It was anything but a quiet morning at Curly Hill Farm in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, when more than two dozen young dairy cows escaped and made an unexpected run through local neighborhoods.

Farm owner Annette Worthington says the cows got out around 6 a.m. Wednesday after getting spooked by a storm overnight. The frightened animals charged through two electric fences, even ripping a fence post straight from the ground.

“They got spooked last night from the storm,” Worthington said. “They hit the fence with such force they ripped a post right out.”

The escapees—25 heifers—scattered into three groups, with some traveling as far as four miles away from the farm. Cell phone videos and doorbell cameras captured the unexpected visitors wandering through suburban developments, with one heifer even pausing to check out a neighbor’s front door.

“We got a phone call this morning that the neighbor spotted some of our heifers at his place,” Worthington recalled.

With help from local police, neighbors, and even strangers, the cows were eventually corralled and returned safely to the farm.

“It was traumatic,” she said. “They were gone, and we didn’t know where they were. That’s the scariest thing.”

Curly Hill Farm has been in Worthington’s family since 1861, and she says the cows are at the heart of everything they do.

“These animals are the future of our herd. We don’t go on vacation, we don’t make a lot of money—but we’re here to take care of them,” she said.

Thanks to community effort and quick action, all of the cows are now safely back home.
