Senator Chuck Grassley Faces Tough Questions on Trump, Tariffs, and Economy at Iowa Town Halls

Senator Chuck Grassley faced a fired-up crowd Thursday as he made town hall stops across Iowa, answering questions about former President Donald Trump, tariffs, and the nation’s economic future. The events are part of Grassley’s well-known tradition of visiting all 99 counties in Iowa each year—a practice he’s kept up since 1980.

During a stop in Jefferson, protesters lined the entrance and the atmosphere inside the meeting turned heated as residents demanded answers about rising costs and what some see as unchecked presidential power.

One woman in the crowd asked, “Can you give all of us any hope at all that you could control the President of the United States?”
Grassley responded with a mix of candor and humor, saying, “If I told you I could control the President of the United States, you’d all laugh at everything I say.”

Other constituents focused their frustration on economic policy—especially the lingering effects of tariffs imposed during the Trump administration. A local coffee shop owner expressed frustration over having to raise prices for every customer due to increased costs tied to the trade war.

Grassley acknowledged the economic challenges but defended the former president's trade strategy.
“Trump ran on a platform of tariffs because he felt the existing policy—particularly our challenge to China—wasn’t strong enough,” he explained.

At a separate event in Stuart, immigration policy came up. As Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Grassley assured constituents that legal limits must be respected. “If [the president] doesn’t know it, I’d be happy to tell him that you can’t deport U.S. citizens,” he said firmly.

Despite moments of tension, many attendees expressed appreciation for the senator’s accessibility and willingness to engage directly.

“This is the best way to get your opinions, even when you're mad about something,” Grassley said. “And I’ll listen and give the best explanations I can give.”
