Firebirds Fall to Abbotsford on Fan Appreciation Night, Prepare for Playoffs at Acrisure Arena

The Coachella Valley Firebirds wrapped up their regular season home schedule with a 4-1 loss to the Abbotsford Canucks on Fan Appreciation Night inside Acrisure Arena. Despite the loss, fans were treated to a night of gratitude and reflection on a season filled with growth and promise.

While the result wasn’t ideal, the Firebirds have already checked several important boxes this season: clinching a playoff spot and securing home ice for the opening round. This year’s squad entered with plenty of uncertainty — a new head coach in Derek Laxdal, a wave of rookies, and questions about leadership and scoring. But the answers came quickly.

Standouts like Yanni Newman, who led the team in goals, and goaltender Niklas Kokko — recently named to the AHL’s All-Rookie Team — helped stabilize a young roster. Players like Jagger Firkus and “Bulldog” defenseman Ty Nelson have also emerged as key contributors. Jacob Melanson, who scored the lone goal Friday night, praised the team’s depth and the strong play of the younger players.

“There were doubts last year, and we proved them wrong. This year, same story,” said Melanson. “We’ve got a really good team going into playoffs. We just need to play to our strengths.”

The Firebirds hit the road for one final regular season game in San Diego Saturday night before returning to host the first round of the playoffs. Their opponent — either the San Jose Barracuda or the Calgary Wranglers — will be determined by the outcome of Sunday’s games. Head Coach Derek Laxdal said the team will be watching closely to see who they’ll face.

Game 1 of the first-round series is set for Tuesday, April 22 at 7 p.m. at Acrisure Arena, with Game 2 scheduled for Saturday, April 26, and a possible Game 3 on Sunday, April 27, if needed.

It’s playoff time in the desert, and Firebirds fans are ready.
