Coachella Valley Families Also Eyeing Car Prices as Foreign Vehicle Tariffs Loom
While the focus of a recent report was the Colorado Auto Show in Denver, the concern it raises stretches all the way to the Coachella Valley: what happens to car prices if 25% tariffs are imposed on foreign vehicles?
For families like Jochen Wagner's — currently helping his 15-year-old son Xander look for his first car — the uncertainty is real. “We’re looking at something either new in this price range or a year or two old,” Wagner explained, “but with tariffs being talked about, it's hard to predict where prices will land.”
The proposed tariffs, pushed by the Trump administration, would place a 25% import tax on foreign-made cars. Automotive experts say that could push vehicle prices significantly higher — particularly in communities like ours where many families look to affordable foreign brands.
Laura Clark, another parent interviewed at the Denver event, opted to buy early. “I just got a new foreign car because I knew tariffs were coming,” she said. Though surprised that car prices at the show hadn’t spiked yet, she’s bracing for rising insurance and ownership costs.
Here in the Coachella Valley, where high schoolers are gearing up for summer jobs and families often pass down vehicles or buy used imports, the economic ripple effect is on people’s minds. Just like in Colorado, local parents say they’re thinking about clothes, shoes, groceries — and now tariffs — when budgeting for a car.
Whether these policy changes take hold in the next year or get stalled politically, families in the desert and across the country are watching the road ahead — and hoping prices don’t accelerate out of reach.

Palm Springs firefighters responded Thursday to a report of a person struck by lightning in the Chino Canyon area. The person was transported to a hospital for medical treatment. Firefighters also responded to a palm tree fire in Chino Canyon that officials say was caused by an apparent lightning strike.
