Palm Desert Dry Cleaner Plays Key Role in L.A. Wildfire Recovery Effort

The devastating Los Angeles wildfires earlier this year continue to leave a trail of impact far beyond the city. In Palm Desert, that impact is visible before you even step inside Classic Cleaners.

Boxes filled with smoke-damaged clothing, curtains, and bedding line the shop floor—each item shipped in from more than 100 miles away as part of a massive restoration effort following the Pacific Palisades fires. The local dry cleaning business has become an unexpected hub for families hoping to salvage what's left from the disaster.

“They package them, they bring them to me, I clean them, get the smoke out of them,” said the shop owner. “Then I finish them, package them again, and they come and take it. So basically, I am the restoration, and they're restoring the houses.”

Despite the abundance of dry cleaners in Los Angeles, the choice to ship items to Palm Desert was strategic. “It is hell over there,” she said. “A lot of dry cleaners are involved, but not every dry cleaner has the space or capacity to handle this volume.”

In just the past month, Classic Cleaners has restored more than 5,000 items. That number is expected to quadruple in the coming weeks, keeping the team busy with a continuous flow of deliveries and pickups.

“They bring one in and take one out, bring one in, take one out,” she added. “It’s a challenge. Sometimes I can’t sleep at night, wondering what I’m going to do tomorrow.”

But for now, this Palm Desert business stands as a quiet but powerful example of how communities come together to support one another in the aftermath of disaster.
