Riverside County Considers New Rules for E-Bikes Amid Safety and Tariff Concerns

Earth Day often inspires conversations about sustainability, and one eco-friendly trend gaining traction in the Coachella Valley is the use of electric bikes. But as their popularity surges, so does the discussion around safety and regulation.

The Riverside County Board of Supervisors has tentatively approved an ordinance that would restrict e-bike usage in unincorporated parts of the county. The proposal aims to prohibit electric bikes on sidewalks, pedestrian overpasses, and underpasses to ensure pedestrian safety.

"For whatever reason, some folks are reporting that we’re banning electric bikes—that’s not the case,” said a county official. “This is about managing public safety the same way we do with traditional bikes.”

While the city of Indio hasn’t seen a spike in e-bike-related accidents, neighboring cities have expressed concern. Indio Police say they’ve received no significant complaints or calls related to e-bikes but acknowledge their increasing presence on the streets.

Interestingly, Indio’s own police department has adopted e-bikes for patrol. Officers say the bikes allow for greater agility and faster response time in dense areas like shopping centers. “From a public relations standpoint, they’re great—and they’ve proven to be incredibly useful during patrols,” said one officer.

Local e-bike retailers are also navigating a shifting landscape. Brian Newman, owner of Pedego in the valley, said he’s seen a noticeable boost in sales, but is now concerned about upcoming tariffs. “Some manufacturers are already pausing production due to the uncertainty around additional costs,” Newman said.

The new e-bike regulations are expected to be finalized and announced early next month.
