CSUSB, Palm Desert Hospitality Students Return Inspired from Immersive Italy Study Abroad Trip
Hospitality management students from Cal State San Bernardino’s Palm Desert campus returned from an enriching study abroad experience in Italy that combined academic exploration with hands-on industry exposure. The spring break trip, led by faculty members Joe Tormey and Michelle Russen, gave students the opportunity to explore the culinary and cultural richness of cities such as Bologna, Modena and Florence
Throughout the trip, students participated in culinary workshops, toured local businesses, and visited historic landmarks, gaining firsthand insight into the high standards of Italian hospitality. “It made me realize I chose the right major,” said one student. “Experiencing the hotels, restaurants, museums, churches, and the guided tours—it really opened my eyes to what I want to do in the future.”
The trip was more than a cultural adventure; it was an academic milestone. By blending classroom concepts with real-world applications, students saw how theory translates into practice in international settings. Italy’s world-renowned hospitality, from welcoming service to its rich traditions, left a lasting impression on the students.
This immersive experience not only enriched their understanding of global hospitality but also reinforced their commitment to their field. As the students return to their studies, many do so with a clearer vision of their career path and a deeper appreciation for the global hospitality industry.
