The Galilee Center Takes What Festival Goers Leave
As music fades and festivalgoers exit the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival each April, a different kind of hustle begins—not on the stage, but in the campsites. For the Galilee Center in Mecca, Monday morning marks game time. For six years now, this nonprofit has partnered with festival organizer Goldenvoice to collect abandoned items left behind by thousands of attendees. Sleeping bags, pillows, tents, and even festival furniture like couches and lamps are all fair game. During festival season the Galilee Center received over 65,000 pounds of usable goods.
But the treasure hunt doesn’t stop at what’s left in the dirt. Pop-up vendor booths also donate any materials they no longer need, including decorations and furnishings. It’s a post-festival tradition that’s turned into a lifeline for both bargain hunters and struggling families. One such regular is Bob Gilles of La Quinta. For him, Coachella isn’t just about music—it's about finding deals.
"I always say to myself during the concert, ‘I wonder if they’re going to be selling that,’” he says. “It’s kind of like souvenir hunting after the show.” He and many other locals descend on the Galilee Center’s store the Monday after the festival ends."It’s a $200 tent going for 10 bucks. The locals know, and they’re on it," Gilles adds.
The impact goes far beyond cheap gear. All proceeds from the sales are funneled into programs run by the Galilee Center, including rental and utility assistance, and a weekly food basket giveaway that serves over 450 families.
And it’s not over yet. With Stagecoach Festival around the corner, the nonprofit is gearing up for another wave of donations. For more information tune into NBC Palm Springs.

Palm Springs firefighters responded Thursday to a report of a person struck by lightning in the Chino Canyon area. The person was transported to a hospital for medical treatment. Firefighters also responded to a palm tree fire in Chino Canyon that officials say was caused by an apparent lightning strike. Estevan Figueroa of King’s Club Barbershop is giving back across the Coachella Valley — one haircut at a time.
