Indio Pushes for Affordable Housing Amid Growth
As the city of Indio continues to grow, local organizations are taking action to address the pressing need for affordable housing. With an increase in population comes the opportunity for more festivals and events, but also a growing concern for residents struggling to find affordable living spaces. Over 60% of renters in Indio are currently considered rent-burdened, with at least one-third of them spending more than half of their income on rent.
To combat this issue, Lift to Rise has launched a petition to advocate for the creation of more affordable housing in the city. The organization's efforts aim to support Indio's growth while helping the city meet state-mandated affordable housing requirements. The development would also provide safe housing and essential educational services for working families in need.
Joe Mota, Director of Power Building, expressed the importance of community involvement in this project. "We held meetings to gather feedback and support from residents, and yesterday, the petition was presented to the Planning Commission," Mota explained. Thanks to strong community backing, the project was approved, marking a significant step forward in addressing Indio’s housing crisis.
Lift to Rise is also focusing its efforts on another affordable housing initiative in Desert Hot Springs, where similar challenges exist. With the support of local leaders and residents, these efforts could help make a real difference in the lives of families across the region.
