Palm Springs Police Officer Stabbed During Altercation with a Suspect
A 41-year-old man was being held on $350,000 bail today following his arrest for allegedly stabbing a Palm Springs police officer in the hand. Officers were dispatched near North Sunrise Way regarding a report of a disturbance on Tuesday. They located the suspect, who allegedly was causing a disturbance and refused to leave the premises. While talking with officers, the suspect allegedly produced a knife and stabbed one of the officers in the hand. He was subdued with minimal force and taken into custody without further incident. The injured officer was treated at the hospital and is currently at home recovering. Phillip Smith was transported to John J. Benoit Detention Center, Indio, CA, and booked on the following charges:
- Penal Code 245(c) - Assault with a Deadly Weapon on a Peace Officer (Felony)
- Penal Code 602.1(a) – Obstruct a Public Business (Misdemeanor)
