Coachella Valley Firebirds Ride Triple-Overtime Win into Game 2 of Calder Cup Playoffs
The Coachella Valley Firebirds are flying high after a thrilling triple-overtime win in Game 1 of the Calder Cup Playoffs, and the excitement is only building heading into Game 2.
To celebrate their playoff push, the Firebirds hosted a pop event Thursday night at Burgers and Beer in Rancho Mirage, where players met fans, gave away merchandise, and handed out tickets to upcoming games. The connection between the team and the Valley has never been stronger.
The Firebirds will face the Calgary Wranglers again for Game 2 this Saturday night at 6 p.m. at Acrisure Arena. Coverage kicks off at 5:30 p.m. with Hockey Night, Coachella Valley on MyFirebirdsTV, available on KPSC.
Following a grueling 102-minute battle in Game 1, head coach Derek Laxdal gave the team some much-needed rest on Wednesday and Thursday. His focus now: instilling a “short memory” mentality for the playoff grind. Win or lose, it’s all about moving forward.
The Firebirds’ youth and energy proved vital in Game 1, with key goals from Mitchell Stephens, John Hayden, and Brandon Biro. Rookie stars like Jani Nyman and Jagger Firkus continue to add firepower to the roster, while goaltender Niko Kokko stood tall in net.
However, the Wranglers aren’t backing down. Calgary has added defenseman Adam Klapka back to their lineup, making Saturday’s matchup even more intense.
For fans who want to fuel the playoff excitement, the Firebirds are hosting another pop event tonight at 29 Palms Casino, starting at 5 p.m.
The road to the Calder Cup is just heating up — and the Coachella Valley is ready.
