Indio Approves New Affordable Housing Project as Rent Burden Grows
As Indio continues to grow, so do concerns over the rising cost of living—particularly the urgent need for affordable housing. According to recent data, 60% of renters in Indio are considered rent burdened, meaning they spend more than half of their income on housing.
To address the crisis, local nonprofit Lift to Rise, in partnership with Abode Communities, launched a petition to support the development of a new housing project called Sonora Homes. The proposed complex includes 203 affordable apartment units and would provide not just shelter, but access to education and support services for working families.
The petition quickly gained traction, with more than 200 residents signing on. At a recent community meeting, 40 to 50 residents showed up to learn about the project, voicing their support and sharing stories of their housing challenges.
"We want to be able to show the planning commissioners that there is real interest from the community,” a Lift to Rise representative stated.
That community support paid off. On Tuesday, the petition was presented to the Indio Planning Commission, which officially approved the Sonora Homes project. The complex is expected to take two to four years to complete and will help Indio meet its state-mandated affordable housing goals.
Lift to Rise is also working on a similar initiative in Desert Hot Springs, where the need for affordable housing is equally critical.
