World Mourns as Pope Francis Laid to Rest
A powerful farewell unfolded in Vatican City today as more than 250,000 people packed St. Peter’s Square to honor the life and legacy of Pope Francis. The 88-year-old pontiff, known globally for his humility and unwavering commitment to the marginalized, was remembered in a deeply moving ceremony attended by over 130 international delegations. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania were among those who paid their respects.
Many in the crowd described Pope Francis as “a voice for the voiceless” and “a pope who loved the poor.” His final public appearance had been just days earlier on Easter Sunday, adding to the emotional weight of the event. The homily, delivered by a senior cardinal, called him a "Pope among the people," capturing the sentiment of millions who followed his papacy.
In a departure from tradition, Pope Francis’ body was carried across the Tiber River and interred at the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore — making him the first pope in more than 100 years to be buried outside the Vatican walls. This modest burial choice reflected the tone of his papacy: grounded, accessible, and focused on compassion over ceremony.

Palm Springs is mourning the loss of beloved entertainer James “Gypsy” Haake, who has died at 94. Haake began his entertainment career at just 19 years old as a Broadway chorus dancer. After retiring from the stage, he returned to performing at 82, becoming the host of Carnival Cabaret at Oscars in downtown Palm Springs. A longtime friend of our station, Haake was a familiar and beloved figure in the Palm Springs entertainment community — and his contributions were recognized with a star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars.
