Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney Declares End of Old U.S. Relationship Following Election Win
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney says Canada's longstanding relationship with the United States is officially over. Carney made the bold declaration following his electoral victory on Monday, where he retained power but failed to secure the majority he had hoped for. The result complicates his efforts to negotiate with President Trump amid escalating tariff disputes.
Speaking to supporters in Ottawa, Carney delivered a strong message, emphasizing Canada's determination to chart its own course.
"President Trump wants our land, our resources, our water, our country. Never. But these are not idle threats. President Trump is trying to break us so that America can own us. That will never, that will never ever happen," Carney said.
A former central banker, Carney built his campaign around standing up to President Trump’s trade policies and promised to diversify Canada's economic partnerships beyond the U.S. He stressed that Canada has many other options to build prosperity for its people and will not be intimidated by external pressures.
The election results mean Carney will now need to work with other parties to advance his agenda. Despite the political challenge, he remains firm that defending Canadian sovereignty and economic independence will be his top priority as the country navigates an uncertain future in its relationship with its southern neighbor.
