Massive Blackout Paralyzes Spain, Portugal, and France as Cause Remains Unknown Massive Blackout Paralyzes Spain, Portugal, and France as Cause Remains Unknown
Millions across Spain, Portugal, and France were left without power over the weekend after a massive blackout brought major cities to a standstill. Traffic ground to a halt in Madrid, rail travel was suspended, and flights were canceled across Europe as emergency lighting guided travelers out of darkened subway stations.
Phone service, ATMs, and critical infrastructure were knocked offline in a stunning display of the grid's fragility. Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez acknowledged the crisis but said the cause of the outage remains a mystery.
Scenes of panic buying played out at Spanish supermarkets, while cultural events like the Madrid Open tennis tournament were also impacted. American tennis star Coco Gauff’s post-match interview was abruptly cut short due to the power failure, with Gauff later posting from a darkened locker room.
Officials say power is gradually returning with help from neighboring countries like France and Morocco, but full restoration could take several more hours. Meanwhile, cybersecurity centers have confirmed there is no evidence the blackout was caused by a cyberattack.
